Preparations are under way for the annual Canals Festival at Etruria Industrial Museum, to be held on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June.

The Canals Festival is one of the largest free community events held in Stoke-on-Trent, regularly attracting thousands of visitors to the junction of the Trent and Mersey & Caldon Canals. Bringing the museum alive with activity and colour the programme planned this year includes vintage vehicles; a music marquee; entertainment for all ages, activities and a variety of canal boats, including unusual working boats, moored on site.

Local favourites, the Florence Brass Band will be playing, along with traditional musician Andy Casserley. Cheshire Poet Laureate W Terry Fox will be performing and there will be some sizable new faces in the form of the Chester Giants who will be arriving by canal boat.

A programme of children’s “Wild Over Waterways” (WOW) activities will be on offer, free of charge, for younger visitors. By taking part in activities such as making a butterfly feeder, fishing and decorating ribbon plates, children explore the city’s rich canal heritage and follow a special waterways trail. Having filled their WOW passport with activity stickers children can claim a goody bag.

Councillor Hazel Lyth, cabinet member for economic development and culture, said: “We are looking forward to a great weekend this year and hope to welcome back everyone who came last year as well as many new visitors. It’s a great way to spend time with the family with lots of exciting activities for visitors to see and take part in.”

Along with the range steam exhibits on display, Princess, the museum’s 1820s beam engine will be ‘in steam’ for the first time this year. The engine powers the historic machinery used to crush bone and flint for the pottery industry at Jesse Shirley’s Bone and Flint Mill, and can give visitors an idea of what life was like in a bygone industrial age

The festival will be on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June, 10am – 5pm and is free to attend. For more information please call Etruria Industrial Museum on 01782 233144 or email etruria@stoke.gov.uk
